Nav Canada Hiring Practice Change
Nav Canada has recently changed the hiring practice for competitions. In future competitions you will now see at the bottom of all job postings this notation: ‘Note: If you did not achieve a passing mark on a knowledge test or interview for this competition in the last 6 months, you will be required to submit supplemental information that will demonstrate that your qualification (knowledge, ability or personal suitability) for this position has changed/improved since your previous application. This information will form part of your application and will be considered part of the selection standard for this role.’ CANSA was not aware of the previous practice. This was to screen out anyone who had applied on a similar competition and not achieved a passing mark in the last six months. As our jobs are unique and competitions are not that frequent due to eligibility list, this should not be an issue for CANSA members.
There is no provision for using past interview performance for screening out members in the collective agreement as there has been no previous collaboration with CANSA on it. If this new practice affects you while applying on a competition, contact your local Regional Vice President for assistance in moving forward.
I would like to take this time to remind all CANSA members of Article 39.05 (m) of the collective agreement:
Any employee who participated in the selection process is entitled, upon request, to a post-board debriefing. If the employee wishes to have their Union representative in attendance, this will be accommodated. At the post board meeting, NAV CANADA shall fully disclose information related to the evaluation of the employee’s candidacy.
I encourage all CANSA members to exercise this right when unsuccessful on any competitive process. Bring your local Regional Vice President to assist you during this process to help advise you and take notes. CANSA is not part of the actual hiring process. We cannot help our members figure out what went wrong during the hiring process without this information as it is only available to the hiring candidate.
I hope everyone is enjoying the summer and finding some time to recharge with family and friends despite all the smoke in the air that most of us are experiencing. It is important for your mental health to find some time away from work to relax and enjoy your time away from work.
In Solidarity,
James Walker
President CANSA/Unifor 1016
