Review of Operational Training Specialist (OTS) Position
On Friday August 18, 2023, Nav Canada announced that they will be doing a review of the Operational Training Specialist position.
As stated by Dan Wortman in his memo, when he travelled across the country talking with the OTS groups he listened to their concerns and developed an action plan. There were several take aways from his meetings that were of concern, so he set up a review process to look deeper into all the issues. On top of that, discussions surrounding the roles and responsibilities of the OTS position have been ongoing for the past year and were brought forward during our January 2023 National Union-Management Consultation (UMC) meeting. The OTS job has evolved since its creation and will continue to evolve with the technological changes planned by Nav Canada.
Moving forward Nav Canada with the support of CANSA has put this initiative in motion to review Operational Training in the units. I will be in communication with ATS service delivery throughout the review and will continue to monitor the evolution of the job as technology is changed.
The review will also include assessment of training capacity and the need for more headcount, formal training in the units, supervisory support, and what changes need to be made to align with the Operational Training Modernization Program (OTMP).
I believe that this review will be good for the Operational Training Specialist group as it will address long standing issues on the work being done within our units.
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to your Regional Vice President.
In Solidarity,
James Walker
President CANSA/Unifor 1016
